Cherry Avenue Garage

This project is a southward expansion of the existing garage facility located adjacent to the basketball, football and baseball sports arenas of the University of Arizona in Tucson. The area on the south side of the garage becomes an active pedestrian zone during sporting events. The design goal was to create a pleasant space enhancing and accommodating the surging volume during these key campus events. The corner gathering zones are generous to permit refuge for a group of guests while waiting to cross the road. The sidewalk is also generous in width to permit easy passage, and bands of exposed aggregate create a repetitive textural pattern. The aggregate pattern also directs pedestrians to small seating nodes adjacent to the main flow. The nodes will accommodate friends awaiting friends without creating a blockage to the general public. The plant selection leans toward Australian varieties, contributing to the Campus Arboretum concept of exploration and education of different vegetative communities.
