Westside Police Substation

The project is an adaptive re-use of a large Kmart into a police substation. The design challenge was to create a classic, clean space while reducing the scale of the enormous pre-existing parking lot in front of the facility. SAGE introduced a number of concepts to the design team, including water harvesting, preserving plants on site, and providing a number of spaces that the entrant will walk through as they enter the building. A variety of spaces, in this context, breaks up the entry sequence and allows for different uses, such as waiting, reading, meeting, and conversation. Security is a concern, so barriers within the pedestrian plaza were designed into the entire space.
