Roy P. Drachman Agua Caliente ParkRoger Road - Tucson, ArizonaThis uncommon oasis at the foot of the Rincon Mountains provides the public with a unique natural setting for enjoyment and passive recreation. A natural spring on site feeds three active wetlands. The vegetation ranges from wetlands, to riparian to upland desert. The history and natural resources are rich and varied. Habitation dates back to 5000 B.C. and includes the hunter/gathers, pre-historic Hohokam, a 1880s Army encampment, a working cattle ranch and a 1930s health retreat. SAGE's objectives on this project were to assist the County in implementing aspects of the master plan.
The budget was restricted, so she worked with the client to create solutions using natural local materials, which saved money in construction. SAGE's most recent contract on this site is for the design of two courtyards associated with the restoration of two buildings, the Guest House and the Ranch House. Included in this project is a security wall for the maintenance building and trail linkages in key areas. |

Joy Lyndes, SAGE Principal, lead the Master Planning as individual experience. The project challenge was to improve the facilities for recreation while preserving the natural and cultural uniqueness of the site. The design balanced the demands of use with the protection of resources. This was done by controlling pedestrian and vehicular access and defining specific use zones.
